I do not know whether this story has hit the news in the states, either now or at the time. Seventeen years ago a three year old boy named Jamie Bulger was in a shopping centre with his mother when he unexpectedly disappeared. it was latter discovered by the CC TV footage that he had been lead away by two ten year old boys.
His murdered and mutilated body was later found on a railway line near to where he had been abducted. His ordeal had gone on for several hours and the infant had been brutally tortured and beaten to death. His killers had left his body on a railway track to try to hide the manner of his death and make it look like an accident.
The two boys who had committed this unbelievably horrendous and sadistic assault were caught quite quickly and after the trial were sentenced to 10 years in prison each. After which time they would be released under a different identity and start a new life somewhere else, largely due to the public reaction and outcry of this shameful crime. The murderers were given the chance to live out the rest of their lives knowing what they had done and have government backed anonymity. But what of the victim, he was not given the chance to live his life and neither was his mother and father.
The trauma to his mother, having to sit in a court and witness the obscene details of her little boy's torture and subsequent murder must have been unimaginable. No one should have to go through something like that.
There is talk now in the UK of the fact that the two boys should never have been tried as adults. . . . Now let's just for a moment step back here a take a look at reality. The crime was calculated, sick, morose, cruel, extremely violent, and the fact that the killers tried to cover it up by putting the body on a railway line shows, quite clearly, that they knew exactly what they were doing. It also demonstrates the sick attributes of the killers mental states.
In my mind, and I know that many people do not agree with me on this, but I think the murderers should have either been locked up for the rest of their lives or preferably sentenced to death. Such was the hideous nature of this event. There is something quite wrong with a system when the perpetrators of really violent and disturbing crimes are treated with so much compassion. Where was the compassion shown to Jamie Bulger.
It has been discovered that lately one of the killers has been rearrested for violating his parole obligations and committed more criminal and violent acts. It must be apparent that this boy, (or man) has obviously got a severe psychological behavioral disorder and should not be allowed to live along side normal people. The age of any individual or individuals charged with such heinous crimes should be irrelevant. If they had the will and desire to do such a thing, then they should be punished accordingly, and never be given the chance to do it again.
I think that some judges and politicians who argue for amendments to the law would be well advised to spend their time doing something more productive. Jamie Bulger's tragic death will stay in the public memory for decades and will go down in history as one of those despicable murders of the late twentieth century. As for his poor family, how can they have any faith in a society or a legal industry that lets psychotic killers be treated as if they have just committed some relatively minor misdemeanor.
On a final saddening note, this week Jamie Bulger would have celebrated his twentieth birthday. He was not given the chance.
